509 Bessie Bell Mountain Road

Castleton $695,000

Paint a mental picture of a rustic jewel box of a cabin privately perched on a high ridge with seemingly endless, magnificent views and you have imagined Red Oak Mountain Retreat.  The property is 49.7 +/- acres on the southern flank of Red Oak Mountain at about 1,000 feet above sea level.  The heavily wooded land rises up Red Oak Mountain from a deep valley between Red Oak and Bessie Bell Mountains.  At the entrance a meandering mountain stream and small meadow create the ideal environment for observing wildflowers and the abounding wildlife including deer, turkey, fox, bear and birds of every variety.  From there, the driveway winds up the mountainside through an impressive stand of poplars and oaks.  Along the way you pass the remains of an old cabin that harkens back to the days when settlers first arrived in the area.  As you reach the top of the ridge, the forest opens to a small orchard and grounds around the picture perfect log cabin.

Built in 1990, the log home is made by Hearthstone, a company renowned for high quality, handmade log structures.  Although it has a small footprint, the home’s design, architectural details and perfect finishes make it seem more expansive.  You enter the front porch to a main level living room with cathedral ceiling and impressive fieldstone fireplace.  The kitchen and dining area adjoin the living room.  On this level there is a rear porch that reveals one of the most expansive mountain views anywhere.

Upstairs there is a private master suite with Jacuzzi tub and separate tile and glass shower.  The bedroom has a cathedral ceiling with massive hewn beams that provide the roof support.

On the lower level first floor,  a brick floor in a herringbone pattern adds another great rustic element to the cabin. There is a guest bedroom with full bath, a family/media room, utility room and wine cellar.  The family/media room can also be used for additional guest quarters because it accesses the full bath.  On this level, there is access to a large rear stone terrace.

Throughout the home, perfect detailing reinforces the rustic log home feeling but adds a level of sophistication that is spot on.  Random width wide board flooring, appropriate antique style lighting, richly grained wood beams, incredible economy of space, unusual materials and many imaginative architectural details all add up to paint the picture.  Although rustic in ambience, the home’s bathrooms are luxurious and the kitchen is modern and efficient.

The grounds around the home feature lovely natural landscaping.  A multi-level stone terrace spills down the back yard offering expansive outdoor spaces for entertaining and relaxing. The extraordinary mountain views can be enjoyed from all points on the terrace.  Several farmhouses, miles away in the view, are the only manmade objects that can be seen from the home.

Red Oak Mountain Retreat has an excellent location in a very private area of Rappahannock County.  It is an easy 70 mile drive from Washington DC and it is close to the excellent restaurants and shopping in Washington and Sperryville.  For groceries, building materials, and supplies, Culpeper and Warrenton are convenient.  Best of all it is only minutes from the annual renowned Castleton Music Festival.

If you are looking for a private retreat with an urbane rusticity, Red Oak Mountain Retreat should be high on your list.
