| Hazel River Retreat SOLD![]() 30 and 40 Hungry Horse LaneSperryville SOLD With the Hazel River crashing through huge boulders as its front yard and the Shenandoah National Park as its adjoining neighbor, Hazel River Retreat is the most captivating property offered in Rappahannock County in many years.
The land is comprised of an island in the Hazel River and a lengthy stretch of the rugged northern banks of the river where it cascades directly out of the Shenandoah National Park. Heavily wooded with oaks, poplars and sycamores with an under story of rhododendrons, azaleas, mountain laurel and fascinating wildflowers, the property feels like a primeval forest. For fishing, hiking, solitude and nature’s wonders, this property is simply enchanting.
Hazel River Retreat consists of two magical cabins on two lots that are being sold as one property. Accessed via an extraordinary footbridge over the wild Hazel River, Boulder Lodge, the larger cabin, is reminiscent of a Park building. Renewal, the second cabin, is linked to Boulder Lodge via a footpath and two footbridges over the island. Renewal can also be accessed with a four-wheel drive vehicle by a dedicated easement through the Park, across a ford in the river. Needless to say, privacy is not a concern at these Hazel River Cabins. The current owners use these homes as three season cottages, March - November.
Boulder Lodge, aptly named for its remarkable rocky landscape, has two bedrooms, one bath, a kitchen/living/dining great room with fireplace and tall windows overlooking the river. The roomy cabin has a gentle rusticity and is very comfortable. A high open screened porch right on the riverbank is the perfect place to enjoy the sounds of nature, the evening breeze and the constant music of the Hazel River. Sometimes it is a gentle background melody but in the Spring or after a rain, it a full Wagnerian symphony. Boulder Lodge also includes a storage shed and a workshop/studio building. The Lodge is a three season home and would require some winterization for year round use.
Renewal is a more traditional mountain cottage, perched above an island in the Hazel. The cottage features two bedrooms a full bath and a good sized kitchen/living/dining room with fieldstone fireplace and pine paneling. There is a screened porch across the front of the cottage that is perfect for enjoying the sights and sounds of nature. The grounds are landscaped with perennials and native plants including a nice stand of Christmas ferns mixed in among the rugged rocks. In front, an outdoor dining and seating area is set up along the banks of the river. Renewal could easily be a four season home with some minor renovation. Together, the two cabins are a remarkable retreat that cannot be duplicated. It is the perfect rustic family compound or property to share with friends.
FYI - The two properties are separate tax map parcels however they share one well. Each property has a separate septic system. The homes are being sold in "as is" condition.
